What is English Express?

On the 17th of January 2025 the next edition of the English Express is here! This day is meant for Fontys (Kind & Educatie) students to give them a plethora of workshops to choose from to further develop their multicultural competencies!

What else does this day have to offer? For one, we have a reading competition and a theatre play! After 17:00 tea and coffee will be provided, afterwards we are going to make our way to the Irish pub, where we will round off another successful edition of English Express!

Introduction & Workshops

To start off the day, at 9:00, all attending students will receive a rundown of what they can expect. Everyone will receive the schedule and once everyone is set, they will head towards their respective workshop rooms.

Reading Competition

Multiple participants decided to sign up for the reading competition. The principle is simple: Who is most enigmatic and engaging when reading? The participants choose what they want to read and get time to prepare while other students follow their own workshops.
One round of workshops is dedicated to preliminaries. Students not taking part in other workshops get the option to watch these preliminaries. In this round 3 students are chosen as finalists.
In the final round, the three finalists read in front of all the students while tea and coffee is being served. The judges decide who the winner is.
Just like last year, the winner of the reading competition receives a prize and a book coupon.

Entertainment

While waiting for the judges to make a decision on who the winner of the reading competition is, some members of our project team have prepared a theatre play! This play combines different fairytales to provide a modern, comedic take on these classical stories.

Students from UMD

Foreign Attendees

students from the University of Maryland (United States of America) will be coming to visit our University!
The timeframe in which these foreign colleagues will be coming just so happens to coincide with the day of English that we started organizing since 2024. It seemed only natural to combine these two events to maximize learning opportunities for both Fontys students and UMD students.
